Business & Multi-Family Recycling
All Alexandria businesses, multifamily properties, such as condominiums and apartments, and Homeowners Association's (HOAs) that contract directly for solid waste services, are required to recycle beginning July 1, 2006. These entities are subject to the requirements described under Article H of Title 5, which was unanimously approved by City Council in February.
In order to comply, all businesses, multifamily properties, and HOAs are required to have a Recycling Implementation Plan Form (RIP) on file. RIP forms were to have been submitted by January 1, 2007. Anyone who has not submitted a RIP form to-date may be subject to penalties ranging from $100 to $500. To obtain the user identification and password necessary to access to your online RIP form, please contact the City's Recycling Office at 703.519.3486, or email askrobbie@alexandriava.gov.
City staff can assist you by conducting a site visit to determine the types of recyclable materials you can recover; determining the appropriate size, location and frequency of collection containers; assist with appropriate informational signs; and suggesting strategies for reducing waste and informing your tenants about how to participate in the program. If you or someone you know needs assistance establishing a program, working with your service provider, or improving a program already in place, please contact the City's Solid Waste Planner, Christine McCoy, at 703/519-3486 ext. 132.
You can also contact your private solid waste provider to discuss establishing a program if you do not already have one in place. Be aware that you must use a hauler that is permitted to operate in the City of Alexandria.
The following resources are available to help you begin recycling at your location:
City of Alexandria "Business Recycling Partners"
The City of Alexandria is recruiting commercial and nonprofit businesses, multifamily properties, and institutions such as colleges or hospitals to promote and document your organization's recycling success stories!

Whether you are a property owner, restaurant manager, building engineer, cleaning staff, recycling service provider, facilities operations manager, or the recycling program champion for your organization - we want to hear about it!
Commercial properties generate more than 75% of the City's trash each year. Establishing recycling programs can help to divert valuable resources, such as paper, from the waste stream, as well as reduce or offset trash disposal costs. By identifying those who are currently recycling successfully the City hopes to promote businesses identified as having an outstanding program in place currently.
If you would like to promote your organization's recycling efforts, please contact the Office of Recycling at (703) 751-5872.
